What are energy blankets? Applying a lightweight vapor barrier membrane on an indoor pool's water surface when the facility is closed at night. This stops the physics of evaporative cooling - the liquid-to-gas transformation of water involving huge loss of Btu's - the root cause of heat loss and humidity gain created by the differential temperatures between indoor water and outdoor air which constantly seek equilibrium. Preventing humidity at its source means mechanical dehumidifier demand is substantially reduced. The results are astounding.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY &
for natatorium operations
LESS ENERGY + LESS WATER + LESS WASTE
LESS EMISSIONS + LESS CORROSION
INNOVATION #1: THE PROCESS OF EVAPORATION
Stopping evaporation prevents heat loss & humidity gain physically, not dehumidifying the air after the fact.
INNOVATION #2: NATATORIUM ENERGY CONTROL
The only way to achieve really big energy and water efficiency is stopping indoor pool evaporation at night.
INNOVATION #3: PRODUCTIVITY & OPERATING COST Blankets cut utility usage in half. Productivity improves handling time remarkably on 50-meter & 25-yard pools.
INNOVATION #4: CORROSION REDUCTION
Blankets stopping evaporation and gassing-off of airborne trichloramines reduces corrosion of dehumidifiers.
EVAPORATION IS HEAT LOSS & HUMIDITY GAIN -
Because all indoor pools are heated year round, evaporative cooling causes heat loss and vapor-saturated air inside the building structure. Because indoor pools require high levels of ventilation, fresh make-up air comes in one side, heated exhaust air goes out the other. Dehumidifiers work 24x7x365 to keep up with humidity generated by the pool. Indoor air quality, chloramines, and corrosion are an integral part of this big evaporation equation. Evaporation rates and energy consumption increase (70% of the daily total) during 8 hours at night. Because nights are always colder, they create higher evaporation rates.
- Traditional natatoriums have dehumidifier-air conditioning-ventilation mechanical systems operating 24/7/365 to battle evaporation and humidity - 70% of energy consumption year round generally occurs at night as lower temperatures accelerate evaporation rates. Evaporation requires energy to transform water from a liquid to a gas. Stopping evaporation stops the energy loss by retaining energy in the water.
- Complementing HVAC - stopping evaporation physically by covering the pool, rather than using mechanical system energy to combat evaporation (heat loss & humidity gain). Since 70% of daily total energy occurs at night, energy blankets reduce losses by about 85%. Stopping evaporation cuts dehumidification demand.
- Innovative natatoriums can create a big financial splash by covering pools every night to stop evaporation, stop humidity, and stop heat loss. This dramatically reduces HVAC & dehumidification demand requirements, energy consumption, and operating costs.
- Energy flow is cash flow - Track your yearly gas, electric, water, and chemical bills. Utility costs are any natatorium's second largest expense after salaries. Using blankets can cut that energy consumption and expense in half. Project that out 10-20 years to fully grasp the financial and environmental implications for your business.
- Sustainability - The result is truly large economic and environmental sustainability.
PRACTICAL USER-GENERATED INNOVATION
Dynamo launched its Energy Conservation Project in 2003, investing in solar hot water heating systems and pool blankets. With 5 big indoor pools, energy savings averaged $237,000 per year for 4 years. Dynamo discovered much greater savings performance in energy efficiency of blankets vs. solar free heat, documenting 6-year cumulative savings over $1.5 million. Simply covering pools at night.

A very innovative new blanket automation system has evolved from this energy efficiency project. Shown above is the "whole-pool" membrane, a single lightweight blanket covering a 50mtr x 25yd pool. This novel method has created honest-to-goodness productivity, made it faster and easier, fundamentally changing handling time and labor. The solution is all about speed, ease, productivity, coverage integrity, and life-guard acceptance. Read more about Dynamo Swim Club's groundbreaking - Energy Conservation Project here.
HANDLING TIME & LABOR - If you think blankets are time-consuming and hard to use, keep reading. We have a solution for those two problems, you'll be impressed....
THE SYSTEM enables two life-guards to easily apply and remove one "whole-pool membrane" covering any sized pool. Automated models take only 30 seconds for 25-yard pools and only 60 seconds for 50-meter pools. Solving time-labor handling issues is the main objective. True handling ease delivers incredible productivity and user-acceptance. Achieving big energy, water, and operating savings for every pool.
Both manual and automatic H2O Energy Blanket models provide fast & easy "furling" system options.
CONVENIENCE - Foremost, it is fast & easy. On-deck, above-deck, or innovativeunder-deck installations. Even bench & bleacher functionality. Consider truss-mounted wall systems at any height or ceiling installations. Each custom engineered for maximum safety, integrity, durability, speed and structurally independent.

***** ASHRAE 90.1-2010
Section 126.96.36.199 - Energy Standards for Buildings
Basis for natatorium design, state/local code, and
HVAC compliance standards for indoor pools
"Heated pools shall be
equipped with a pool cover"
ASHRAE Energy Code requirements state that blankets on indoor pools are mandatory. Deploying a vapor barrier membrane physically stops evaporative cooling, heat loss, and humidity gain at its primary source, the open heated pool. Before it happens, rather than after-the-fact.
NOTE: ASHRAE 90.1 mandates pool covers for commercial indoor pools, but allows an exemption if over 60% of the energy for heating comes from site-recovered energy or from solar. Substituting dehumidifier heat recovery units might be claimed as a means to exempt use of pool blankets, yet this greatly increases electricity consumption and corrosion without negating the exemption.
This is a classic energy trade-off, it does not reduce total energy consumption. Only pool blankets physically stop evaporation and energy loss. Blankets used at night can reduce half of total daily energy consumption in natatoriums. This 50% includes the combined energy required for heating the pool, dehumidifying the air, heat recovery, ventilating airborne tri-chloramines, and treating fresh make-up air.

LEED Green Building Rating System and certification addresses key factors - sustainability, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, materials & resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation & design process. LEED requires meeting ASHRAE energy requirements, which make pool blankets mandatory.

Commercial Energy Efficiency
Section 504.7.3 - POOL COVERS:
"Heated pools shall be equipped with
a vapor retardant pool cover
on or at the water surface"
ICC - most U.S. cities, counties, and states choose International Code Council building safety codes and energy standards. For new construction or major renovation, indoor pool blankets must be installed and used.
Because it is always colder at night, making evaporation rates always higher, dehumidifiers consume over twice as much energy during 8 nighttime hours compared to the other 16 daytime hours. Blankets stop heat loss and humidity gain, including release of airborne tri-chloramines. This reduces exhaust ventilation requirements and improves IAQ, the primary cause of chemical corrosion of dehumidifiers.
Up to 70% of every indoor pool's total daily energy consumption is lost to evaporative cooling at night - generally between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Using blankets stops heat loss, reduces dehumidifier demand each night by 85%, and reduces 24-hour daily energy consumption by 50%.
HVAC energy calculators are based on 24-hour averages, they do not reflect the huge consumption-evaporation increase at night.
U.S. Department of Energy / Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy findings:
"Using pool blankets on
indoor pools overnight
reduces energy losses 50%-70%,
cuts water losses 30%-50%,
and lowers chemical losses 35%-60%"
AQUASYNTHETICS- H2O Energy Blankets are lightweight engineered fabrics that perform in water, hydrophobic, chemical resistant, mold & mildew resistant, high durability, abrasion resistant, high vapor barrier technology that stops 97% of heat loss due to evaporation, ventilation, and dehumidification - without worrying about problems with chloramines, organic & inorganic compounds, ammonia, body oils, air flow, indoor air quality, corrosion, and water balance. These unusual high performance fabrics spend their life in water, every day year round. "Aquasynthetics" is a fitting description.
"ENERGY BLANKET"-Energy blankets, fabricated with aquasynthetics, put a lid on warm pool water. The warmer the water, the cooler the outside air, the lower the relative humidity, the greater the rate of evaporation. All natatorium pools are heated, all nighttime temperatures go down, and all evaporation rates go up at night. A vapor barrier blanket will virtually stop surface water evaporation, a phenomenon known as evaporative cooling.
Evaporation is the cause of the vast majority of heat loss and humidity gain. Blankets significantly reduce a natatorium's year round energy and water consumption, humidity, corrosion, emissions, interior air quality problems - and operating costs.
LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY & WATER CONSERVATION "Best Practices" should be the foundation of natatorium operations. Financially, operationally, and environmentally, the huge implications for natatoriums to demonstrate energy & water leadership examples for sports, recreation, aquatics, fitness, wellness, municipalities, educational institutions, and industry warrant a closer look.
Energy & water are the pillars of clean energy infrastructure and healthy environmental values for commercial indoor pool owners. Covering continuously heated pool surface water at night yields a significantly greater cost savings impact year round than any other equipment replacement, procedure, or operating practice possible in natatoriums.
PURE PHYSICS - a vapor membrane covering the water surface physically stops evaporation - which stops humidity and stops heat loss. It stops evaporation at relatively no operating cost vs. powering dehumidifiers at really big cost.
Retain heat energy in your pool, improve air quality, keep your money from evaporating, make a big contribution to climate conservation, feel much better.
